Hillsborough County, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County (DOH-Hillsborough) urges residents with stable medical conditions who may need electrical equipment, oxygen, dialysis, or assistance from medical professionals for physical, cognitive, or medical needs, to register with the Florida Special Needs Shelter Registry prior to the peak of hurricane season (mid-August through mid-October). Registration does not guarantee acceptance in the special needs shelter. After registration is completed, DOH-Hillsborough will review your information to see if you qualify and ensure the shelter can meet your individual needs.

In an emergency, such as an evacuation for a hurricane, you may need to go to a special needs shelter. If you know or care for an individual who may have a medical need, it is important that you register with the Florida Special Needs Shelter Registry as soon as possible. You will need to log in with an existing account or create a new account.

Registering provides local emergency management officials with the information they need to quickly assist you during an emergency. For more information, contact DOH-Hillsborough’s Special Needs Shelter Program office at 813-307-8063. This line is not staffed during all business hours. You will be prompted to leave your name and contact information and your call will be returned.

If you are eligible for a special needs shelter, items that should be brought to the shelter include:

  • List of medications and dosage
  • A 30-day supply of medications
  • Vital medical equipment for those who may be electrically or oxygen dependent
  • Backup energy sources for essential medical equipment
  • Any special dietary needs or food
  • Personal information including photo ID, insurance card, list of emergency contacts, and your primary care provider’s contact information

After completing the registration, additional information will be provided to you by DOH-Hillsborough regarding evacuation and sheltering options available.
