Lead poisoning is a reportable disease in the State of Florida.

Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention conducts investigations of environmental exposure in cases where lead poisoning has been documented. This program also provides community education to home owners, home buyers, renters, property owners and managers, building trades, code enforcers, and realtors about environmental hazards that may be present in homes, particularly those built prior to 1978.

Harmful effects of lead poisoning in children:

• Damage to the brain and nervous system
• Behavior and learning problems, such as hyperactivity
• Slowed growth
• Hearing problems
• Headaches
• Seizure
• Coma
• Death

Early signs of lead poisoning:

• Persistent tiredness or hyperactivity
• Irritability
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Reduced attention span
• Difficulty sleeping
• Constipation
