January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
January 03, 2020
The United States Congress designated January as Cervical Health Awareness Month. More than 13,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year, but the disease is preventable with vaccination and appropriate screening.
HPV (Human papillomavirus), is the main cause of cervical cancer. According to the CDC, cervical cancer starts in the cervix, which connects the vagina to the upper part of the uterus. The uterus is where the baby grows when a woman is pregnant.
Cervical cancer is a highly preventable disease; however, all women are at risk for cervical cancer.
There is a vaccination for HPV available at the Florida Department Health in Hillsborough County Immunization Clinic.
We also offer screening tests (Pap test or pap smear and HPV test) to help prevent cervical cancer for those who qualify. For more information about our Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (BCCEDP) and to see if you qualify please visit our BCCEDP page.
Other ways to lower risk of developing cervical cancer include: not smoking, using condoms and limiting the amount of sex partners.
Find more information at the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program website.
