Chronic Diseases

Florida Department of Health - Hillsborough County

Chronic diseases, of which there are many, typically develop over a long period of time and last for a long time, often the rest of one's life. Conditions like diabetes, emphysema, arthritis, obesity, asthma, heart disease, and others, can usually be controlled so that the individual can maintain a good quality of life and enjoy the things they like to do.

Since chronic diseases are long-term situations, it is important for people who have these conditions to be educated about and learn to self-management their conditions in day-to-day life. Several Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County programs are available to help individuals learn to better manage life with your condition. Prevention of chronic disease is also possible by reducing risk factors.

Most infectious, communicable diseases usually begin quickly and end in a relatively short period of time. They are the "high profile" disease of movies and books. Some of these can also be "chronic". And while many of these can be extremely serious and even deadly particularly if untreated, the truth is that most people in our country will die from a chronic disease. Heart disease remains the number one killer of both men and women today. Diabetes, particularly type 2, is increasing. Obesity and overweight are risk factors for developing these two serious diseases and contribute to poor outcomes in many others, continuing to make an impact as our nation grows heavier.

Florida CHARTS, a community health assessment resource tool set, provides extensive data on disease rates, births, deaths, and more for all Florida counties.
